Car Hire Cairns

So you’re heading up to sunny north Queensland for your summer break and have already organised your luxury car hire in Cairns? That’s makes for the perfect holiday, but what about when it’s raining?

It’s something that you need to consider, because whilst we love our fabulous tropical weather, it also means that we have a rainy season from November to March. This isn’t a concern to the locals, because we are used to the wet weather. On holiday, however, you might feel a little hard done by because there’s nothing to do!

Nothing could be further from the truth, because there’s plenty to do in Cairns - whatever the weather. Even if it’s the rainy season, we still have great temperatures and wonderful sunny days that can be spent on the beaches or exploring the region around Cairns. Luxury car hire Cairns makes even a rainy day seem perfect!

As locals, we know how to keep ourselves entertained when it’s raining, so here’s our list of things to do when it’s wet and you need to keep everyone happy.

The Australian Armour & Artillery Museum

Drive 20 minutes north of Cairns City in your luxury car hire and you arrive at the Australian Armour & Artillery Museum. If you love military vehicles then this is the ideal place to while away a few hours if it’s raining. With more than 200 armoured vehicles and guns on display, this museum is host to the largest display of armoured vehicles and artillery in Australia, focussing on post WWII.

From Panzer tanks to field guns, howitzers, anti-tank guns, armoured cars and mortars – these vehicles come from around the world and they are continually adding to their collection. The museum even offers tank rides and you can also try your hand at the rifle range! It’s a great place to take the kids on a rainy day in Cairns.

Cairns Art Gallery

Located next to the Esplanade in Cairns means that you can leave your car rental at your accommodation and take a leisurely walk down to the Art Gallery. As one of the largest regional art galleries in Queensland, a short stop here followed by lunch at the iconic Perrotta’s café (adjacent to the gallery) that overlooks the lagoon, makes for an idyllic way to spend a rainy day.

Cairns Target Shooting Club

If you hop in your car rental and head south west from Cairns for 20 minutes  you’ll arrive at the Cairns Target Shooting Club in Wrights Creek. Located in lush tropical grounds, the club provides a safe and fun atmosphere where you can practice your shooting whether experienced or not. This is a great place to visit even if it’s raining.

Cairns Zoom Wildlife Dome

When it starts to rain, pile everyone into your luxury car hire and head towards the Cairns Zoom Wildlife Dome at the top of the Reef Hotel in the CBD. Touted as the world’s first high ropes course in a wildlife park, you can cuddle a koala, enjoy interactive wildlife presentations and even take a trip down one of the three zip lines right over a sleepy 4-metre crocodile!

Cairns Aquarium

There’s nothing quite like a day at the Cairns Aquarium for keeping the kids happy! At the aquarium, it doesn’t matter if it’s raining because with marine life encounters and diving with sharks, you’re going to get wet anyway! Check out their freshwater, tropical rainforest mangrove and reef displays and top off the day with lunch at their café or restaurant with a massive indoor saltwater tank!

Go Bowling Cairns

Everyone loves ten pin bowling so when the rain starts coming down, it’s time to hop into your Cairns car rental and head off to Go Bowling Cairns. Book your game online and take advantage of their discount specials and when everyone’s tired and hungry, head off to one of the local restaurants for your evening meal.

Cairns Museum

Located in the CBD you’ll find the Cairns Museum where you’ll see local artworks, tributes to adventurers and learn more about the local history.  Their exhibitions change over time, but recently have included ‘Living in the Topics’, ‘Changing Cairns’, and ‘The Verandah’. Check out their website to find out what’s on during your holiday in Cairns.

Crystalbrook – Eleme Day Spa

Located in Crystalbrook Riley, a five-star luxury resort on the Esplanade, there’s no better sanctuary in the rain than their fabulous Day Spa. This is where you can relax with your own customised treatments, whether that’s a long anticipated detox or a wonderful muscle melting massage. After all, holidays are all about being pampered!

Cairns Night markets

Cairns night markets are famous for their local crafts, scrumptious street food and wonderful entertainment. Located in Abbott Street in Cairns and open from 4.30pm to 10.30pm, no visit to Cairns is complete without spending some quality time at the night markets, even if it’s raining!
