So you’ve decided to hop into your luxurious Cairns hire car and head to Mareeba but first, you need an itinerary! Well, why not stop at the mountain village of Kuranda, just a short 40-minute drive northwest of Cairns? There are plenty of art and craft galleries here, as well as restaurants and cafes. Even some of the most awesome walking tracks and waterfalls in the tropics. You can also take a riverboat cruise along the Barron River and visit Birdworld with over 350 free-flying birds. Or the Koala Gardens with wombats, wallabies, snakes, lizards, gliders, crocs and koalas.
The next part of your journey takes about 30-minutes, driving south from Kuranda to your destination – Savannah in the Round at Mareeba. Established in 1890, many of the old buildings in Yungaburra are still in use today, so it’s a town that’s rich in history.
The trip from Yungaburra to Cairns in your Mustang rental takes about 75 minutes, driving north through Goldsborough, Gordonvale and Edmonton (famous for sugar cane). If you love hiking and exploring, then you’ll enjoy this leg of your trip. So check out the Mulgrave Settler’s Museum in Gordonvale, spend a day hiking Walshs Pyramid and visit Sugarworld, a leisure park with waterslides, pools and parklands.
