Cairns Hire Car Tablelands - IG/ My colourful World

Jump in your Cairns hire car and head to high above Cairns in the mountains. Here you’ll find the Southern Tablelands, nearly 65,000 km2 of Australian country ranging from tropical highland rainforests to dry tropical savannah. So let’s hop in your luxury car hire, turn south out of Cairns and discover the wonders of the Southern Tablelands!

With waterfalls, rivers, swimming pools, freshwater dams and National Parks galore, you’ll have no trouble finding something to do in the Southern Tablelands. Especially with this special range of fleet to choose from!

See crocs in the wild at Innisfail

Just over an hour south of Cairns, your luxury car hire brings you to Innisfail where you can stop for morning tea at one of the boutique cafes dotted around the town. If you arrive too late for morning tea then treat yourself to lunch at the Crown Hotel, before heading off to Snapping Tours.

Here you can while away an exciting and awe-inspiring 2 hours on a guided river cruise,  spotting the huge crocs as they bask along the river banks. Tours are $40 for adults and $110 for 2 adults and 2 children (4 to 15 years) but they are only available from April to December.

Get to the Mamu Tropical Skywalk in Cairns hire car

From Snapping Tours in Innisfail, head west along the Palmerston HWY for 30 minutes until you reach the Mamu Tropical Skywalk in Wooroonooran National Park. Signage is located on the highway and the Skywalk is on the right-hand side of the road.

There you’ll find a 350m long elevated walkway, rising from ground level to reach 15m inside the lush tropical canopy. There’s also a 10m long cantilever and a 37m observation deck that provide spectacular views over the North Johnstone River Gorge. If you love a good walk then there are also more than 1100m of walking tracks through the forest. There’s plenty of parking on site for your Cairns hire car and admission for adults is $28 and for 2 adults and 2 children (5 to 14 years) is $84.

Swim at Mungalli Falls

A short 15-minute drive in your Cairns luxury car hire from the Mamu Tropical Skywalk brings you to Mungalli Falls in Milla Milla. It’s the only privately owned World Heritage-listed waterfall in Queensland.

To get to the falls themselves, you need to head to the Mungalli Falls Outdoor Education Centre (a wilderness retreat that allows free access to the falls), then head down a dirt track to the viewing platforms where you might be lucky enough to spot wild platypuses at play. These falls are beautiful at any time of the year but there’s best seen from December to April during the rainy season. There are no facilities at the falls but for a quick stop, they are worth the visit.

See Platypuses in the wild after cruising the plateau in your Cairns hire car

Heading north in your Cairns luxury car hire for 40 minutes brings you to Yungaburra where you can see platypuses in their natural environment. Located on Gillies HWY in East Barron, there’s a small parking area just near the viewing platform where you can leave your Cairns hire car.

The viewing platform is right alongside the road and looks out onto Peterson Creek. Platypuses are seen regularly in the creek, particularly underneath the bridge that spans the creek but you need to keep quiet and have lots of patience!

Enjoy scones with jam and cream at Lake Barrine

A short 10-minute hop in your Cairns hire car brings you to Lake Barrine Teahouse and Rainforest Cruises. Even if all you do is stand and admire the view of the lake and rainforest, this is a stop you don’t want to miss! The view from the carpark is spectacular but from the teahouse is breathtaking!

Their multi-award-winning Devonshire teas are to die for and sitting on the balcony overlooking the lake will leave you speechless. To help walk off your Devonshire tea why not explore the local flora and fauna as you circumnavigate the lake on a well-maintained walking track?

Splash around at Sugarworld Adventure Park

Continuing to head north towards Cairns for 50 minutes in your luxury car hire brings you to Edmonton where you’ll find Sugarworld Adventure Park. Located on Hambledon Drive, Sugarworld is a great place to stop whether you’ve got kids or not.

Attractions include the ultimate water zone for little kids, 3 super water slides and a putt-putt island, as well as swimming pools. All set in 17 acres of lush historical parkland and there’s even a café where you can fill up on a burger before returning to Cairns. The cost of general entry including the putt-putt and little kids splash town is $13.65 for adults and $49.90 for 2 adults and 2 kids. If you include the 3 super slides it’s $24.15 and $78.75, respectively.
